Financial assistance to help community housing providers complete preservation activities related to the sustainability of existing community housing projects.
Preservation Funding provides financial assistance to support the cost of completing preservation activities.
This funding helps:
existing community housing providers remain viable
prepare for future funding opportunities
Preservation Funding is open to:
Projects that are currently subject to an active, eligible federally administered operating agreement.
Projects that were previously subject to a federally administered operating agreement that have since expired. This includes projects previously administered under a federally administered operating agreement that were transferred under a Social Housing Agreement which have since expired.
Funding details:
The maximum funding available per project to complete eligible activities is $50,000.
Maximum funding may be increased to $75,000 on a case-by-case basis.
Each funding agreement offers up to 18 months from the approval date to complete the approved activities.
If you are under an active, eligible federally administered operating agreement
You must comply with the terms of the operating agreement (not in breach).
If you were previously subject to a federally administered operating agreement that has since expired
This includes those previously administered under a federally administered operating agreement that was transferred under an SHA which have since expired.
Your project must:
be primarily residential
have a minimum of 5 affordable units or beds
be considered affordable, as determined by the municipality, province or territory, or as accepted under other CMHC programs
If you were previously approved for Preservation Funding
All activities previously approved for funding have been completed.
Eligible activities1
Funding may be provided to support costs that help preserve community housing.
Third-party quotes are required for all eligible activities included in your application.
Activities may include but are not limited to:
a building condition report
capital replacement reserve planning
an operating viability analysis
an age-friendly conversion assessment
an energy audit
1 Expenses/costs related to eligible activities carried out and invoiced prior to the approval date of Preservation Funding are not eligible.
Application and approval process
CMHC will accept and review applications on a continuous basis.
During the assessment of your application, CMHC will:
assess your eligibility
review the third-party quotes provided
determine the amount of funding your project is eligible to receive
You will receive the decision via email.
If you are approved:
the approved funding amount will be disbursed in full following the approval of your application.
Note: Prior to submission, the terms and conditions of Preservation Funding must be adhered to. You will have the opportunity to review the terms and conditions on the final page of the application before submitting.

The application form will consist of several questions over several pages. You can see your progress through the steps of the application at the top of each page.
As you move forward through the application, the completed pages will be saved automatically. Partially completed pages – those that are missing required fields – will not be saved.
You may leave the application portal and return later. Your application progress will be saved.
For your application to be considered, the following information must be completed and uploaded to the portal:
Signed Integrity Declaration (PDF): To ensure the integrity of persons or entities applying for Preservation Funding.
Third-party quotes are included for all eligible activities you would like to receive funding for.
Incorporation/registration or any document related to your legal status: To demonstrate the recipient or borrower is duly incorporated, organized, established and validly existing under the laws of its jurisdiction of incorporation, operation and organization.
Copies of any consultant or agent agreements (if applicable): To demonstrate due authorization if you are making the application on behalf of a person or entity intending to apply for Preservation Funding.
Rent rolls for the last 3 months (inclusive of the unit number, unit type, square footage, and monthly rental rates) that allow us to confirm affordability (only for projects previously administered under a federally administered operating agreement or those transferred under an SHA which have since expired).
Important:
Apply using the Preservation Funding form in the application portal.
Give yourself ample time to fill out the detailed, multi-page online form.
