This study uses an innovative way of measuring poverty-related, affordability indicators among Canadian households. One of the measures used is the housing hardship indicator.
This indicator captures households that have insufficient income after paying their shelter costs to afford a modest, basic standard of living.
The measures proposed in the study go beyond the typical 30% affordability threshold. It reflects the prevalence, depth and severity of housing issues related to affordability, hardship, and housing-induced poverty.
These indicators help derive inequalities indices to offer insights into the socio economic inequalities between different vulnerable groups in Canada.
