We partnered with Indigenous Services Canada to fund this research. It uses culturally appropriate research methodologies to help us better understand the issues faced by Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities in accessing adequate housing. This research builds on earlier work done by Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak.
The goal was to better understand the challenges faced by Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ folks. To do this, the research team did:
- a literature review
- an engagement session with community members
- quantitative analysis
- focused interviews
The research covers these key elements:
- A GBA+ lens reveals the intergenerational impacts of land dispossession.
- A review of data on Métis housing and living conditions revealed gender-based violence, its effects on lone parent households, Métis elders, housing precarity and homeownership.
- The research revealed Métis women and 2SLGBTQIA+ people continue to experience the impacts of intergenerational displacement today. These include discrimination and poverty.
- The study helps us understand how housing conditions for Métis women and 2SLGBTQIA+ people can be improved.
