Modular housing is an innovative, energy efficient solution to building affordable homes quickly. Its attributes make it especially relevant to housing for Indigenous and northern communities.
Project scope and expected outcomes
A new generation of housing will help address housing need in Cree Nation communities.
Like other regions across Canada, the Cree Nation in Québec, is dealing with the impacts increasing homelessness and housing need. These challenges have been deepened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In mid-2021, 12% of Canadians cannot find housing that they can afford or that meets their needs. It’s even worse for Indigenous households – that’s at 18%.
To alleviate some of this housing need, 55 modular homes will be built within 1 year in 9 Cree Nation communities in Québec.
These homes will provide housing for elders and persons with disabilities in 9 Cree Nation communities in Québec. The following communities will each receive 5 new modular homes:
- Eastmain
- Nemaska
- Ouje-Bougoumou
- Waskaganish
- Waswanipi
- Wemindji
- Whapmagoostui
An additional 20 homes will be built to meet the requirements of the larger communities of Chisasibi and Mistissini.
This development project received $17.4 million in funding through the Projects Stream of the Rapid Housing Initiative.
The Rapid Housing Initiative is centred on a human rights-based approach to housing. This means serving people experiencing or at risk of homelessness and others who are in priority populations, including Indigenous peoples.
