We’re excited to announce the recipients of the 2023 Housing Research Awards.
CMHC President’s Medal for Outstanding Housing Research
The ReHousing the Yellowbelt research project is set to shape the city’s housing landscape. This research focuses on converting single-family homes into multiplexes. This project was initiated in response to the City of Toronto’s 2023 zoning changes which allows multi-unit housing in all residential neighbourhoods, helping to increase housing supply. The research team has prioritized developing tools to support this housing shift over regulatory changes. They developed a catalogue with over 50 prototype plans to convert common housing types into multiplexes. And they’re empowering citizen developers with this and other resources to explore multiplex development.
The Housing Assessment Resource Tools (HART) project has developed a suite of 3 evidence-based tools aimed at helping governments and housing providers to better understand and address their housing needs. The project offers extensive research and data analysis as innovative solutions to Canada’s housing crisis. These free, online tools work together to identify populations in need — including National Housing Strategy priority groups. The tools also determine affordable shelter costs, locate sites ideal for affordable housing development and offer regulatory tools to help preserve existing housing. The HART project provides valuable insights to advance Canada’s goal of reducing core housing need as outlined in the National Housing Strategy Act.
The Practical Applications of a Women-Centred Approach to Housing Design project addresses the housing needs of low-income women and children experiencing violence. The research identified key barriers to accessing safe and supportive housing. The project focused on gathering insights from women and housing professionals. The goal was to identify design solutions that will help meet the unique housing needs of this group. The research produced a toolkit featuring women-centred design principles and evidence-based designs and housing floorplans.
