Read an overview of refugees’ housing situation using previously unavailable data from:
- the 2016 Census and information from Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada administrative data, the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB);
- and, a custom record linkage of the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) and Immigrant Landing File (ILF).
On average, refugee households were faced with:
- double the incidence in core housing need compared to other immigrant households
- more than 4 times the incidence in core housing need compared to non-immigrant households
While affordability was the most common reason that refugees fell into housing need, crowding was also an important contributor.
