Developing Sustainable, Affordable and Culturally Appropriate Housing

This Research Insight focuses on a research project led by the Native Women’s Association of Canada. The project’s goal was to develop a Sustainable, Affordable, Accessible, and Culturally Appropriate (SAACA) housing model tailored for Indigenous women, girls, two-spirit, transgender and gender-diverse+ (WG2STGD+) individuals.

Key objectives of the project include:

identifying successful housing features and models for SAACA housing in First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities across various regions and communities in Canada
creating a SAACA housing model preliminary design with the help of architects, incorporating key features and metrics identified through research
providing designers, architects, developers and policymakers with essential insights into the housing design needs of Indigenous WG2STGD+ peoples
