This year's National Housing Day is focused on the importance of home. Every day, we go to work and come back to our homes. Our homes are where we make memories with our families and friends. They're also where we find stability in a constantly changing world.
That's why it's so important that everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home. This National Housing Day, let's promise to do everything we can to make sure everyone has access to quality housing.
Housing is a key determinant of employment
Studies have shown that people who live in stable, affordable housing are more likely to be employed than those who do not. Housing also plays a role in educational attainment. Children who grow up in safe and stable homes are more likely to do well in school and are more likely to graduate from college.
Housing has a significant impact on our health
People who live in safe and stable homes are more likely to be healthy than those who do not. Housing stability has been linked to better mental health outcomes, as well as improved physical health.
Given the importance of housing in our lives, it is essential that we do everything we can to ensure that everyone has access to safe and affordable housing.
Too many Canadians don’t have adequate affordable housing
1.4 million households are in core housing need, which is defined as living in an unsuitable, inadequate or unaffordable dwelling and being unable to afford alternative housing in the community.
The challenges are particularly acute for people living in vulnerable situations, including racialized households, single-parent households and seniors living alone.
We believe that everyone in Canada deserves a home they can affordable and that meets their needs
But we can’t do that alone. We need to keep up our “all hands-on deck” approach to address housing affordability. We need to keep moving forward with partnerships and community involvement if we want to provide everyone living in Canada access homes that they can afford and that meets their needs!
