A strategic approach to housing supply
Canada has a housing shortage. We need more homes and the right kinds of homes. The Housing Supply Challenge works to solve housing challenges by breaking down the barriers that limit the construction or preservation of housing that is affordable. It does this through collaboration and innovative thinking across the housing sector.
The Housing Supply Challenge brings together a wide range of participants, from industry experts to community groups, to cultivate solutions that have the potential to increase Canada's housing supply.
Northern Access Round: Supply Chain Solutions for Northern and Remote Housing
Round 3 of the Housing Supply Challenge is called the Northern Access Round. It focuses on identifying innovative solutions to address the unique challenges of building and maintaining housing in Northern and remote areas of Canada.
The Challenge seeks solutions that reduce the time, cost and risk to access resources for building and maintaining appropriate northern and remote housing supply. Unpredictable weather, a short building season, transportation and storage limitations and the impacts of climate change can cause challenges in the supply chain.
These challenges limit new development and increase construction costs.
Proposed solutions include local storage and construction facilities, climate and culturally appropriate designs and training programs to increase the number of local skilled workers.
Building for the Future: Innovative Construction for Housing Affordability
Round 4 of the Challenge, Building for the Future focuses on solving construction related barriers to housing supply. These challenges limit innovation in the housing industry.
The Challenge seeks innovative construction processes, techniques, systems and materials that will increase the supply of housing that is affordable, climate resilient and meets people's needs. The goal is to find solutions that help increase capacity for building and renovating housing to impact housing supply.
This round emphasizes the creation of long-term, affordable housing across various tenures, including rental, ownership and co-operatives, focusing on solutions that have significant, sustainable impact.
Level-Up Challenge: Transforming the Way Canada Delivers Housing
Round 5 of the Challenge seeks to increase the adoption of system-level solutions that transform Canada's ability to produce more housing, faster.
Level-Up's goal is to scale system-level solutions like skill enhancement, automation and streamlined supply chains to expedite housing provision. Successful solutions will lead to quicker development, reduced costs and permanent improvements to how housing is delivered in Canada.
